Graduate Management Training Scheme

About the Scheme

The ‘Grad Scheme’ is a multi-award winning fast-track to NHS leadership for graduates. The scheme is recruited and led by the NHS Leadership Academy and here in the NHS Thames Valley and Wessex Leadership Academy (TVWLA)  we have local responsibilities to manage placements and local networking and training.

The scheme is 2-3 years long dependent on specialism with rotating full-time work placements and post-graduate education and leadership development. Our trainees are enthusiastic, innovative and motivated to improve patient care.

Programme and Placement Manager training

All our placement organisations have training to host GMTS trainees. This outlines what to expect from a trainee and placement, clarity on your responsibilities and the trainees’ and understanding of the scheme as a whole. The session also enables open discussion about successes and challenges managers face and the chance to look at individual plans and issues.

This training is appropriate for line managers, placement managers and programme managers with regular contact with the trainee. Placement and line managers are required to have attended training at least once per year while actively hosting a trainee. You are only required to attend if you are hosting a trainee this year. Other members of the placement team are welcome and all training sessions will include a mix of experience and roles to enable fuller discussion.

Call for Assessors

If you would like to be involved in the future in the interviewing process or help with the assessment centres for trainees please email

All of our trainees undertake ‘orientation’ to health and care. This involves meeting with and shadowing different people throughout health and care services in Thames Valley and Wessex. We are always looking for people to meet with our trainees to tell them about their part of the NHS. Experiences vary from a day with a Porter, a day in the life of a hospice, meeting with Community Pharmacy, a Chief Executive and more.

If you are interested in meeting one or more of our trainees and sharing your experiences please email.

Call for Management Scheme alumni

We are seeking to build a secure database of alumni of the MTS scheme working in Thames Valley and Wessex area.

Please note

By agreeing to be on this database you may recieve invitations to scheme related events and development and network events locally and nationally to support the wider scheme.

If you are an alumni of MTS and would be happy to be part of MTS Alumni database please email with your contact details.
